AU welcomes appointment of Kamil Idris as Sudan's new prime minister
AUC Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf commended the move by Sudan's junta leader, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, to appoint Kamil Idris, a former UN official and one-time presidential candidate, as prime minister.
The African Union has welcomed the appointment of a new prime minister in Sudan, describing it as a potential step toward inclusive governance in a country mired in war and military rule.
In a statement on Tuesday, AUC Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf commended the move by Sudan's junta leader, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, to appoint Kamil Idris, a former UN official and one-time presidential candidate, as prime minister.

"The Chairperson commends this development as a step toward inclusive governance and expresses hope that it will contribute meaningfully to ongoing efforts to restore constitutional order and democratic governance in Sudan," he said.
This is Sudan's first formal appointment of a prime minister since the military coup of 2021 dismantled a fragile civilian-led government and plunged the country into political paralysis.
The AU, which has long advocated for a return to civilian rule in Sudan, emphasised its continued support for the country's unity and political stability.
"He reiterated the African Union's firm commitment to the unity, sovereignty, and stability of Sudan and to the pursuit of a durable political solution that secures peace, development, and democratic governance for all Sudanese," the statement added.
The announcement comes less than a month after Burhan named Dadallah Al-Haj Ali, a little-known diplomat, as acting prime minister—an appointment that was never formally implemented and appeared to evaporate on arrival.
Whether Kamil's elevation marks a meaningful political shift or yet another cosmetic manoeuvre by the military remains to be seen.
